My name is Sharon O'Donnell and I am currently a student teacher from
Centenary College in New Jersey. I wanted to take this time to thank
you for the wonderful idea you have provided as a project for the 4th
grade class I am working with! I am a mother of two and am in my first
education class. I have found such joy in working with the children on
different projects dealing with the environment, but was having trouble
figuring out what to do for Earth Day! I really appreciate the
innovative idea and I wish you good luck in the future. I will let you
know how the project goes. We are only going to do a small amount
(100), but when I get my certification, WATCH OUT!!!!
Thanks again,

One of our local grocery stores was very excited to be part of this Earth Day project. All it took was one phone call and we were on our way.
We had each of our students in the 6th grade decorate at least one bag as a T.A.P.(Teacher Advisory Program) activity the week before Earth Day. We have been using a map to pinpoint as many of the locations as possible. Great geography lesson, too!

Comments: I am pleased to announce that North Elementary School in Youngstown, Ohio has decorated 600 grocery bags to be distributed at the Belmont Avenue Giant Eagle in Youngstown. The children and staff had a great time with the project. Giant Eagle will distribute the bags on Earth Day and will hang a giant Earth Day banner signed by all students and staff of North Elementary. We are proud to be a part of the Earth Day Groceries Project!
I just wanted to let you know
personally what a wonderful project this is. We recently combined the staff
and students of 2 closed elementary schools here in Youngstown,Ohio. Things
happened very fast...closings, packing, moving, new staff, new children,
moving 700 elementary kids (K-4) into an old highschool building. It's been
a rough year. But the students and staff really came together on this
project...mainly, I think, because it was"non-invasive" to the teachers. I
did the foot work, picked up the bags, distributed them and returned them to
the store...no problem...no muss! no fuss!
It also was a chance for the school to do a service in the community...much
needed here in Youngstown. I'd like to see our children do more next
year...your project has given me a few ideas on what I'd like to see done...
So, thanks once again...I've come to really use the Internet as a tremendous
resouce for my classroom and my teaching...will mark my calendar for next
year and hopefully involve more stores and perhaps invite the parents and
grandparents in for a bag decorating party !
Sincerely,

This is the 2nd year K-3 students have participated in this great project to promote Earth Day awareness. Our town recycling service encourages the use of paper bags when sorting recyclables. Our local grocery stores have been flooded with customers requesting our decorated bags. The students wrote their first names on the bags. Since this is a small town, many customers get a kick out of getting a bag decorated by someone they know! Thanks for the great idea. We look forward to doing this again next year.

Comments: 1999 was the first year that our school decorated Earth Day grocery bags. Our students were thrilled to learn that their art work would be given to customers at our local SuperValu grocery store on Earth Day. We decorated about 700 bags, which look terrific. The experience was a great way for students to learn the importance of taking care of our planet. Since the community is involved, the project is an authentic experience for students and the message will reach many people. This was a great project.

I'm responsible for the Pollution Prevention Committee in the Renal Division at Baxter Healthcare. I saw this Earth Day Grocery Bag idea on the internet and thought it was great idea. It makes for a great outreach program in the community. Three schools participated. 700 bags were decorated by the students at O'Plaine Elementary School, 730 bags decorated at the Spaulding School and 200 bags at the Woodland School. These schools are located in Gurnee, Il. The Jewel and Domincick food stores were very cooperative in supplying the grocery bags. Another idea would to have your local grocery store sponsor an Earth Day Coloring Poster Contest. Happy Earth Day 1999!

Buce Twp. School
Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783
This is the second year that our school has participated in this project. The project was brought to our attention by a member of our Compact Committee. The entire school Grades K -5 are involved in this project. The decorating of the grocery bags with environmental messages is under the direction of our Art teacher. The 400 grocery bags are then returned to Price Chopper where customers receive a decorated bag packed with their groceries. The children enjoy this project very much and it is continued by the classroom teachers with lessons on our environment annd how we can protect it. We also have a yearly Earth Day Program which consists of poems, essays and posters created by the students. It is a schoolwide event.
