I happened upon your website about the Earth Day paper bags and guess
what... my school has done this project this year, too! I teach at the
Alabama School for the Deaf in Talladega, AL and I read about this idea in
an environmental brocure. Our elementary and Jr. High students decorated
one or two bags each and we will be returning them to the local Winn Dixie
store next week. We displayed the decorated bags at our school's Social
Studies Fair last week so that everyone could admire them before returning
them to the grocery store. Thanks for the neat website!
Happy Trails!

been studying Rachel Carson and the environment (wetlands,
rainforest, tide pools...) Then to finish off, I put them in

It was hard covering up all the writing on the bags without
using anything that would rub off on car seatsor a lot of

St. Joseph's School in Croton Falls, New York is a small Pre-K through 8th grade parochial school located in Westchester County. This is the second year we have participated in the Earth Day grocery bag project. Each student from Pre-k through grade 8 carefully decorates his/her own bag. Some classes work with their buddy class. This is when younger children are paired with older students. Last year our principal received a call from someone who had received one of our decorated grocery bags. She was so pleased with the special Earth Day message she received that she had to call to tell her.

It all started when my mom and I were coming home from an Olympia field trip, and we noticed all of the litter along the freeways and highways. My mom talked to my teacher, Mrs. Christensen, about it. She had the same thought about the litter as my mom did. Then, my teacher somehow heard of this groceries thing. Dear Earth Day Grocery Bags Staff,
I first heard of your project in the Weekly Reader magazine. I was delighted to stumble across a free, simple, environmentally sound project. With only five days until our Spring Break, I thought I would keep the project small. Much to my suprise, word spread and before I knew it four ACES schools were participating. Comments from teachers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, art teachers and teacher assistants have been nothing but positive!!! Even the most physically and mentally challenged students created awesome bags using stamps and sponge painting. The students in my room also studied slogans and advertising! The local Stop and Shop was thrilled to participate. Thanks again!

All of our students decorated a paper grocery bag
for Earth Day ( a total of 160 bags).
We obtained our bags from a Ralphs store in a nearby town, Escondido.
Our school was featured in a local newspaper that was doing
a write-up about Earth Day. We would like to thank Ralphs
for donating the bags to our school,
and we hope that their customers enjoyed our art work.
We look forward to participating in this project again next
year! Happy Earth Day from the students at our school!

Comments: One of our fourth grade teachers suggested the project and
had students first write on a section of the grocery bag to
tell Earth facts or ways to care for our Earth. Then fourth
grade students collected the bags for an editing project.
Finally, the bags were returned to the classes for the
students to add their artwork. Therefore, when the bags are
taken to the grocery (Granville IGA) they will have written
messages and artwork.

Comments: Happy Earth Day Earthlings! We have had a great time again
this year participating in the Earth Day Groceries Project.
Every student has drawn beautiful pictures on the grocery bags
with wonderful Earth Day messages. We doubled the amount of
bags that we decorated this year too. Thank you for giving
us the opportunity to celebrate Earth Day this way! We love
our EARTH!
