Other Earth Day activities are planned at our school. We have a forester coming to plant a tree. Our cafeteria staff is making dump cake to serve for dessert on Earth Day. The recipe: Grease a 9"x13" baking pan to represent the Earth. Tell students that Earth gets polluted when people dump litter on it. Illustrate this by doing the following: Spread one can of cherry pie filling on the earth to represent the ground. Sprinkle one 8-ounce can of crushed pineapple on the ground to represent litter. Dump one box of yellow cake mix on the ground to represent factory ashes, soot, and other forms of pollution. Pour one stick of melted butter on top to represent an oil spill. Leave layered. Do not stir! Bake at 350 for 45 minutes to 60 minutes. This was submitted to "Schooldays" magazine by Amy Regan from Hudson, Ohio.

Comments: We had a great time decorating our grocery bags. First, we brainstormed all the words and phrases that we could think of as we thought about Earth Day. The children generated great discussions about these ideas. The children worked quietly and I could hear them talking about Earth Day ideas as I walked around the room. They are going to ask their families to go food shopping at the store that the grocery bags will be handed out. This was a great and worthwhile project. Comments: We are a Roman Catholic School in Dutchess County New York with about 200 children. This is our first year doing this project but the children seemed to really enjoy it. We got the bags from a local Grand Union in our area who were more than happy to help us out. I am sure we will be doing this again next year and we are going to try and double the bags we do.

Our school has teamed up with FINAST grocery for this K-5 project. We picked up the bags last week. Each class got together to determine how many bags each person wanted to decorate and thus how many bags each class needed. The kindergarteners are responsible for the final count on Tuesday the 20th. (We think we will have around 220 bags). Our principal and twelve children will deliver the decorated bags to FINAST on Wednesday so that they can distribute them to patrons on Earth Day! One of the messages that the second graders wrote on the bags was "Use durable cloth bags over, and over, and over, and over again!" This was a great project! Thank you for your support!

Our entire 5th grade is decorating bags for Earth Day and will be taking them to our local Smith's grocery store this week for distribution. The kids had a lot of fun and it gives more meaning to the environmental unit we are learning this month. Thanks for the idea! Look forward to doing it again next year.

Comments: Our student council members were very impressed with the creativity of their schoolmates when it came to decorating the grocery bags and were excited to deliver them back to the store. They hope the community enjoys receiving their groceries in the decorated Earth Day bags and can see that we all need to work together to save our earth! Many thanks to the local grocery store which supplied the school with these bags!!
