Comments: We teamed up with a local Albertson's store (located at 48th & Ray Rd.) to work on this project. We had iincredible support from teachers and students for this project. Over 750 bags were decored by student in all grades - K-5 and have been displayed at the store. Today (22nd) they will be used to bag the groceries purchased at the store. A big thanks to Stan Zoller, Albertson's store manager who encouraged us to tackle this project and all the kids and teachers who participated. We are already talking about what we will be doing next year to make this even more of a celebration. Thanks for the great project idea!!

Comments: On April 19, 1999 we decorated 25 bags from Fry's Food and Drug. I will be bringing the bags back to Fry's so they can give them out to their customers. We came up with lots of different slogans like "Be Kind to Our Earth" and "Plant More Trees." We had a lot of fun and the bags looked so good we wanted to keep them and display them at our school! Thanks Weekly Reader for helping us to be more aware of how we can help our earth!

Comments: My students had a wonderful time decorating their bags in preparation for earth day. They were just appalled at all of the things that people are doing to harm the envirnoment and didn't understand how it could keep on happening. This activity tied in with our science unit, Interaction of Living things.
This was a great activity!

The kids had a lot of fun and it gives more meaning to the environmental unit we are learning this month. Thanks for the idea! Look forward to doing it again next year.

The students of Nautilus Elementary School in Lake Havasu City, Arizona have begun the project of decorating 500 grocery bags from two local stores in our community, Smith's Food & Drug and Mega Foods.
Students from K-5 at our year-round school have been decorating for over a month because of our extended breaks, but we'll be ready the week of April 20-24 to distribute our bags. We will place a box at the stores so customers can re-donate back the bags for bookcovers to be used at the school. This will show our students another example of reusing. Please visit our website for other activities at: http://www.havasu.k12.az.us/nautilus/erthdy98.htm

4/22/97 Valley Horizon Elementary School in Yuma, AZ, decorated 830 grocery bags from Fry's food store. We decorated 350 large bags and 480 small bags with many good ideas for energy and water conservation, the 3 R's, save the Earth, and plant a tree or garden messages. Bags also included colorful artwork. Students in grades 1 through 6 participated in their regular classrooms or during their science classes. The managers at Fry's were very enthusiastic about the project. Bags were distributed to customers today. This was a fun and worthwhile project. We hope to see really big totals from around the world on your web site.

HAPPY EARTH DAY!
Reporting for Big Park Community School in the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, AZ and Sedona Recycles, our local recycling center:
Together we decorated 376 bags which will be distributed tomorrow, Earth Day, at our local Weber's IGA grocery store.
I learned a lot from doing the project that will help me to do an even better job next year.
#1 Remind the kids to decorate the bag right side up
#2 Don't let kids take bags home to decorate as they get a bit "beat up" looking
#3 Set up booths at festivals for decorating bags in the months preceding Earth Day-it's a popular creative activity for people of all ages.
I look forward to doubling or tripling our count next year.
Sincerely, Janet Jones, Coordinator of Earth Day Bag Project in Sedona.
