We decorated 525 bags!
About our project: Garden City Elementary students drew their messages on 525 Chapel Hill O’Malia’s paper grocery sacks. Students “borrowed” paper bags and decorated them with pictures and messages about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. The sacks were then returned to O’Malia’s where they were used to bag their customers’ groceries on Earth Day, April 22nd. Messages in both English and Spanish gave ideas on how to care for the environment as, “Have a heart, Do your part-Pick up litter,” “Keep our water clean by picking up litter,” “Recycle plastic, cans, and paper,” and “If you cut down a tree, plant a new one.” Gator students had a ball spreading environmental awareness for their future and giving back to their community.

We decorated 600 bags!
About our project: I discovered this project last year while searching for ideas for our annual Earth Day Art Contest. Participation had dropped off and I was looking for a fresh idea. We were overwhelmed by the response! Approximately 600 bags were decorated and handed out by two of our local grocery stores. Special displays were created with selected bags. One bag was selected to have the art transferred to t-shirts given out to participants at our annual Earth Day Bicycle Tour on the refuge. The selected bag was then framed and presented to the student at one of the participating grocery stores by myself, the store manager and Charlie Charlton, mascot for Keep Charlton County Beautiful. The event was covered by our local media.

We decorated 400 bags!
About our project: I received an e-mail through the girl scouts about this activity and thought it was a great idea to get our whole school involved. I've approximated the number of bags and students involved. I actually picked up 500 bags from Publix and the art teacher had her students color them and she delivered them back to the store. The Publix chain of stores are very good at participating with the schools.

We decorated 194 bags!
About our project: Earth Day Bag Report from 186th Street School-Rooms 15, 48 and Afterschool Program 1. Borrow -2nd Grade Class (Room 15) chose to decorate bags* and wrote a request letter to Trader Joe’s and Ralphs. -Teacher borrowed about 200 bags. (90 were special “Earth Day” bags from Ralphs with a blank side to decorate, a note to children, and an offer of 5 cents for returning decorated bags.) 2. Decorate -2nd Grade Students drew Earth scenes. -Teacher photocopied drawings in black and white on recycled paper, and made die-cut stencils of hearts and E-a-r-t-h. -2nd Grade Students painted 5 drawings each with watercolors, which we stapled to 100 bags. -Additional Students- 4th and 5th Graders (Room 48) and afterschool program participants used stencils and watercolors to decorate remaining bags. 3. Return -Teacher returned bags to stores on April 21st. Ralphs paid 5 cents per bag. The $4.50 reward was donated to charity, Guide Dogs of America, in the form of items from their wish list, toys and towels they will use to train service dogs for vision-impaired individuals. 4. Report This report is being submitted by a Peace Games Coordinator. Peace Games (www.peacegames.org) is a violence prevention program that empowers elementary school students. Peace Games looks forward to a day when all children have the knowledge and skills to be proactive “peacemakers”. We believe violence is learned and thus strive to teach peacemaking, just as students are taught to read, write, and do math. In their Peace Games classroom lessons, students are encouraged to do community service learning projects. *After hearing about Earth Day Bags, which I found in an Internet search, the 2nd graders of Room 15 surprised me with a unanimous agreement to decorate Earth Day Bags. Once they started the project, it was simple to get more students involved to complete the project in time for Earth Day. I believe that all our students who participated learned from this project that they were being peacemakers by helping their community and the Earth/environment and that it felt good to do so! I believe we will participate next year! We were unable to obtain permission slips for all students and thus are unable to post photos. Thank you for reading!
