We decorated 125 bags!

About our project: Each kindergarten student at our school decorated a bag. Each 1st-grader made a bookmark, and each 2nd-grader created a flyer/pamphlet about Earth Day 2001 (to put into the bags.) The students mobilized the community by word-of-mouth and by class web pages that our creations would be used to bag groceries bought at local stores in our small community on Earth Day. Many families turned out to see if they'd be lucky enough to get their own child's creation. Some of the projects were created on the computer and all were innovative, colorful, and fun! The students learned a lot about Earth Day, conservation, ecology, recycling, etc. The community were amazed at the creations of our students. We plan to make this an annual event!

We decorated 350 bags!

About our project: The students at Merrydale Elem. Magnet School are very much involved in recycling and preserving our environment. We celebrated Earth Day by decorating grocery bags donated by Albertson's and Winn Dixie grocery stores. The national organization of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Nonpareil Chapter of Baton Rouge, volunteered their time to get the bags for us, pick them up after we finished decorating them, and return them to the grocery stores. Thank you ladies for your time you donate to our students. We had 350 bags to return to the stores. We are also planning to attend the Earth Day celebration in Baton Rouge on April 22. Happy Earth Day from Merrydale Elementary in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
