We decorated 200 bags!

About our project: We have a parent in my class that works at Smith's on Juan Tabo and Montgomery. She brought in 200 bags. My class, as a project colored pictures and glued them to grocery bags. The bags were then returned to Smith's to be passed out to customers for Earth Day. My second group was 2nd graders who are my cub scouts, from Pack 281-Queen of Heaven School. They too, colored bags that were sent to the Smiths.

We decorated 100 bags!

About our project: My students LOVE hands-on activities so much that they even forget they are reviewing academic content. I was told about this project by a colleague and friend in North Carolina by the time I was reviewing figures of speech: metaphors, similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification. So I thought it would be a great idea to work on this excellent project and include this part of content area in their environmental messages. The students loved the idea and managed the vocabulary so well without realizing they were studying. This type of assessment works pretty well in my class work. In this case, I happened to incorporate most of the multiple intelligences (this time visual, kinesthetic, logical, interpersonal and intrapersonal). On the other hand, the manager of the store was impresed with the work of my students and promised to hand them all out first thing on April 22nd. Also, my students are telling their parents to go shopping at that store early in the morning, so they could get a bag decorated by themselves or some of their classmates. I can tell that this project is an excellent idea to incorporate content to real life issues. Thanks to my friend and colleague in NC for letting me know about this project, the store's manager for lending us the paper bags, my school principal and mentor for encouraging me to work on this project for the first time, and most importantly: MY STUDENTS!! They did an awesome job! Congratulatios....and HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!!

Look at our pictures!
