We decorated 40 bags!

About our project: I am an intern at PS7 Elementary school in Oak Park. I work with Mariah Landers, the kindergaten teacher, there. Part of my project there is to teach the kids on why recycling is important to our world and what they can do to better their recycling skills and help out at home. Well, I was on the internet one night looking up things for them to do and I came across this painting paper bags for the store on earth day and I thought that would be the funnest thing for the kids. So I talked it over with Ms. Landers and she said it was a wonderful Idea. Well it turns out that I got sick and couldn't do it so Ms. Landers asked if she could do it when I was gone. I said it was okay because I thought that they would have fun. So they all painted the bags and they turned out wonderful. I wasn't sure where to call or where to turn them in yet but it was fun and the kids loved it!

We decorated 355 bags!

About our project: It was an easy and worthwhile project. We enjoyed decorating the bags and then seeing them out in public. Thanks for giving us this great idea. It was simple but very effective. We started early this year, in January. We had better quality looking bags. Our club loved seeing our bags out in public and they knew they were helping the environment.

We decorated 1600 bags!

About our project: We decorated 1,600 bags! This is the second year that the City coordinated the program with local schools and grocery stores. City staff contacted each school and invited them to participate in March. Students at 5 elementary schools (Lobo, Marblehead, Vista del Mar, Concordia, and Our Lady of Fatima) and the Boys and Girls club decorated bags donated by Ralphs Grocery Stores. City staff picked up and delivered bags from the stores along with Earth Day Grocery Bag posters for each classroom. After the bags were decorated, staff verified that last names were not written on the bags before returning to Ralphs. Everyone enjoyed participating!

We decorated 1300 bags!

About our project: This is the first year that City of West Sacramento schools participated in the Earth Day Groceries Project. All of the grade levels at Bridgeway Island Elementary, Westmore Oaks Elementary, Holy Cross, and Our Lady of Grace participated, along with the 5th grade classes at Alyce Norman Elementary (for a total of 1578 students!) The city coordinated and co-sponsored the project along with our waste services provider, Waste Management, Inc. (WMI) Blank paper bags were donated by Raley's bag supplier, Weyerhaeuser. Students were able to enter their decorated bag into a contest where they were judged on their creativity, and not their artistic ability. Great prizes were supplied by the City of West Sacramento, WMI, Rite Aid, and River Cats baseball. The winning bags were displayed at Raley's on Earth Day. The rest of the bags were used at Raley's to bag shopper's groceries on Earth Day. The students, teachers, principals, Raley's employees, and the shoppers all enjoyed the project. The students especially liked the idea that they were teaching people about Earth Day and providing great ideas on how to help protect our planet. I hope to participate again in 2006!
