We decorated 240 bags!

About our project: This year, along with the 200 students in our elementary school, we also included two preschools that are located nearby. The fifth grade students were able to tour the Safeway store and learn how a large corporation helps our community through their recycling efforts. On our walk back to school we collected trash in our neighborhood. It was a great time!

We decorated 189 bags!

About our project: Our class spent about 2 weeks learning about how we can help the earth in a unit called Earth Day - Every Day. Kids in our class went to other classes in the school and told kids about how they can make a difference in helping the earth and how decorating grocery bags can send earth friendly messages to the people in our neighborhood. We also celebrated Earth Day by wearing green and doing some fun activities.

We decorated 250 bags!

About our project: Before the students decorated the bags, we (AmeriCorps volunteers) visited each classroom to do environmental "mini-lessons" where we did read-alouds with environmentally-themed books and had discussions about the meanings of the stories and also went over basic recycling/reusing ideas so that the students would be more aware of why they were participating in the project. They all seemed to love it! We had lots of fun!

We decorated 227 bags!

About our project: Our project was done through the library. Students decorated their bags while they were in the library for their reading time. The kindergarten class decorated smaller bags provided by another grocer. We discussed Earth Day, recycling, and environmental concerns as the bags were decorated.
