We decorated 2810 bags!

About our project: 2002 was our second year to partner between the City of Sherman Environmental Education program and the Sherman Independent School District. We worked with all 7 elementary campuses (6 schools K-4, 1 school 5-6). The art and homeroom teachers combined art with lessons on paper recycling. The bags are hugely popular at our local grocery stores, and the local TV station did a feature story & interview on both the morning and noon news to promote the bags.

We decorated 440 bags!

About our project: Looking for a way to contribute to Earth Day in a significant, fun, and easy way, I went to the WEB. By chance, I located this project. Whole Foods said they would NOT participate. Disappointed, but undaunted, I went to Whole Earth Provision Company. They agreed and, in fact, contacted their sister store in south Austin and got them to participate, also. So we used 220 of their wonderful bags. Their bags were wonderful because they were different sizes, sturdy, and the company logo has a drawing of the world on it. The students incorporated their Earth Day message with the logo on the bag! So many teachers wanted to participate that I also contacted our closest Randall's. They graciously agreed for us to borrow 200 bags to decorate and return. Everyone seemed very pleased with the participation and outcome.

We decorated 23 bags!

About our project: At Fairhill, students celebrate Earth Day at the end of a stressful week of Standford testing. This year students in grades 1, 3 and 4 decorated bags donated by Albertson's. 1st grade math made a graph of how many trees various stores cut down for a one week supply of paper bags. 3rd and 4th grade completed tables using the same information but projecting usage for an entire year. They learned a lot, enjoyed the creative outlet and were happy to get the reduce, reuse, recycle message out into their community.
