We decorated 170 bags!

About our project: We enjoyed decorating the grocery bags, and some students even brought in the bags they received as "shoppers" to show the class. All of the bags were brightly coloured with slogans and pictures that shared important messages. Each class discussed appropriate Earth Day pictures and slogans prior to the activity, brainstorming and drawing from content they had covered in their classes. For example, the grade 1/2 class watched the Dr. Seuss video THE LORAX, and brainstormed ideas from the story.

We decorated 1000 bags!

About our project: It was our first year undertaking this project. The EcoKids environmental group at Halfmoon Bay School sponsored it and challenged other schools on BC's Sunshine Coast to take part. Of 10 elementary schools, 1/2 (5 schools) did take part! We have heard lots of great feedback from customers who received our Earth Day grocery bags. One customer wrote a wonderful letter to a Kindergartener in our school, telling her that she loved her decorated bag so much that she was going to keep it forever. We hope this is the first year of many to come. Thanks for such a great idea!!

We decorated 263 bags!

About our project: Some classes decorated the bags with their buddy class. Response from the store staff was great when we delivered the bags. We have not done any more followup.

We decorated 450 bags!

About our project: I found this web-site a week before Earth Day, but we still managed to get the stores interested, get the bags done and returned by Thursday afternoon ready for Friday. The stores were excited by the project and apparently the customer response was very positive as well. Next year Save-On-Foods already has ideas for building on the idea by possibly including the kids as grocery wrappers for an hour or two!!
