We decorated 40 bags!

About our project: On Monday,April,18th, 2005, the students of Portland International Community School and staff, started to decorate the Earthday Grocery bags. After three days of work, we had a contest and displayed the artwork on the wall. Everybody chose their favorite artwork, and then selected a winner. After the contest everyone had a picture taken with their own bags. Then we delivered the grocery bags at the Safeway store.

We decorated 500 bags!

About our project: I had worked on this project with 5th graders at another school and thought it would be fun to try at this brand new location! Other teachers heard about it and signed up; soon the entire student body was involved and I became the "coordinator"! This school is the hub of a brand new development, populated by citizens from around the globe. Although many students knew about Earth Day, others did not. The grocery bag project was a quick, fun, and unique introduction and/or reminder of the importance of this day. Our bags were donated by the QFC Market "down the hill". They will be used during Earth Week and, hopefully, reused at least two or three times before they are recycled. Teachers and children alike were enthusiastic about the grocery bags. We are all looking forward to seeing them around our neighborhood! Thanks!

We decorated 490 bags!

About our project: This was an exceptional project. We had a parent, Laurie Hutchins do all the connections with Safeway. It was important to invite all staff members to participate. I gave each teacher the number of bags they would need along with the instuctions and deadline dates. I believe this was the success of our project. We intend to make this a tradition at Chapman Hill.
