We decorated 606 bags!

About our project: This is the sixth year Sultan Elementary School and the Sultan Red Apple Market have partnered in the Earth Day Grocery Bag project. Paraprofessionals Melony George and Kathi Olson coordinated the project involving the six hundred six K-5 students. Large grocery bags donated from the Red Apple Market's manager, Bill, were decorated in classes as part of Earth Day Education. These were collected and one winning bag was chosen from each classroom. One creative bag was chosen as a winner from each grade level. These grade level winners were invited to deliver all the bags to the Red Apple. After having their picture taken holding their unique bag, winners were bussed along with principal, Mr. Blasko, to the Red Apple on a sunny afternoon. The Red Apple Market displayed many of the bags for the community to see. On April 22 shoppers were given their groceries in these special "Earth Day" bags. All participating students received a pencil imprinted with "Cougar Paws". Classroom winners were awarded certificates along with medallions, cougar pins, and other "earthy" prizes. Thank you to all students who created bags in honor of Earth Day 2004!

We decorated 552 bags!

About our project: This is our second year doing this Earth Day activity. Everyone had such a fun and easy time doing it, we want to make it a tradition here at Shiloh. It has been a great way for our school to reach out to our larger community with an important message and wonderful student art.

We decorated 225 bags!

About our project: I was approached by a PTA member, Doris Small, and asked if I would like to participate in the project. The enthusiasm was contagious and the next thing I knew all primary classes were involved. Our students were proud to be helping such a great cause. We will be eager to participate next year. Thanks Doris! And thank you Albertsons!

We decorated 389 bags!

About our project: Well, it was another very successful effort here at Arbor Heights Elementary, where The Earth Day Groceries Project started! My classroom of third graders was the organizing force behind the effort, as they went to all classrooms to explain how to decorate the bags, to talk about the contest, and to answer questions. They did a wonderful job! Then of course there was all the editing work to do. They became real good at spotting spelling errors and correcting them carefully before we brought them back to the store. When we got to Safeway the day before Earth Day, Rocky received the school's bags, gave us a tour of the store, and even had treats for everybody. Thanks, Rocky!! The day after Earth Day we had an Earth Day party in the classroom, with tons of great food. A special appearance was made by the Earth. Everybody sang "Happy Birthday, dear Earth", and we watched "The Lorax". What a wonderful time! Our pictures will be up by the first week in May.

We are a Tree City and as a part of these celebrations, the 63 preschool children not only decorated 144 bags to donate to two local grocery stores, Dissmore's and Safeway, but also planted 6 trees, 2 red maples adn 4 blue spruce.
