We decorated 450 bags!

About our project: After confirming this project w/ our school principal, we approached Strack & Van Til grocery store with the idea and received welcome support. They gave us 500 bags which we distributed to classrooms 2 weeks in advance indicating the activity as in-class optional or to send home with students. This was the first time for us to try this project. We were overwhelmed when we picked up the bags and had over 450 decorated! Our club members then delivered the bags to the store the day prior to Earth Day. A photo was taken and local newspaper confirmed they would include us in upcoming issue. This project was a great way for our small group of nine environmental club members to get the entire school involved in spreading the message about caring for our natural environment. Make certain to ask the store for plain bags, it makes it easier for the children to decorate.

We decorated 66 bags!

About our project: I am a college junior and am interning at this center just for the semester. I wanted to do a big project with the kids towards the end of my internship and thought this sounded like a great idea. Most of the people I worked with (the store, the center, etc) had never heard of this project before so it took a little convincing. Once it got rolling it went pretty well though. I only had a couple kids per classroom that ended up not doing it for whatever reason; I thought this was a pretty good success. I did this with kids from the age of about 4 up to about 16. However, I definitely realized that at least for me students around 5th grade seemed to respond best to the project. All in all it was a great success!
