We decorated 500 bags!

About our project: Our school has celebrated Earth Day for the last four years. We have planted trees and flowers at our campus. This is the first year the whole school is participating in the Grocery Bag Project. Safeway has donated 500 hundred bags for our students to color and decorate. Our teachers get a folder with curriculum ideas to integrate this celebration in their lesson plans. This project is aligned to the Arizona State Standards.

We decorated 129 bags!

About our project: Every class at Morristown School participated in the Great Grocery Bag project. The manager at Basha's in Wickenburg went out of his way to get plain big bags for the students. This made the artwork easier for the younger students. We had a great time doing the bags and if it makes one person think about our earth, it was worth it.

We decorated 200 bags!

About our project: My second grade class decided to form an Earth Day list of projects for our school. We thought that the Grocery bag awareness project would be a good one. I asked the manager (Jim) at our local Safeway if he would help us out. I explained what Earth Day is and how he could help by letting our students write and color Earth Day messages on the store's paper bags. We would return them so they could be used to send groceries home in and promote Earth Day. Next we talked to the whole school (during an assembly) and asked who wanted to help out. Once we got a list of classes that wanted to participate we got the bags and delivered them to the classes. The children who participated wrote some wonderful messages and drew beautiful pictures. I delivered the bags to the store in 3 trips. They have been using them and say that the customers LOVE them! What a great way to educate the children and community at the same time!
