We decorated 150 bags!

About our project: My two classes at Central East Middle School were very excited to ba a part of the Earthday Groceries bag project. We typed up a letter explaining the project, a group of students went to local stores in the neighborhood collecting the bags. Some merchants were afraid they wouldn't get their bags back and declined to be involved. Overall we collected approx 150 bags from 5 stores, one big store and 4 local food establishments (which the school staff order a lot of lunches from). Some students' parents even ordered food in hopes of getting a bag returned to them. We all enjoyed ourselves. I look forward to being involved with my new class of students next year. We decorated 145 bags!

About our project: This year we concentrated on the ocean and sea life to tie into our thematic unit on the oceans. Some of the kids made their own graphics using Paint and incorporated them into their bags. The faculty and staff voted on the top bags and prizes were awarded.

We decorated 100 bags!

About our project: I happened upon this project, while looking for ideas to enhance our study of environmental issues. The children were very enthusiastic. The Times Herald, our local newspaper, wrote a story and took photos when we delivered the bags on 4/21/04 to Genuardi's Supermarket. The story and picture were featured on the front page of the newspaper on Earth Day, 4/22/04! My students also made projects from recycled and natural materials as part of a Kids Grow Expo. These included litterbug scarecrows, designed to deter litterers.
